<!-- MAIN CONTENT -->
<p>Why is this project? There are serious privacy related questions with
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personally_identifiable_information">personally identifiable
search data</a> stored by the various search companies. Private data was already
<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/08/06/aol-proudly-releases-massive-amounts-of-user-search-data/">
released to the public by some companies</a>, and is
<a href="http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/mpapps/pagetools/print/news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6745191.stm">
an accident waiting to happen with other companies</a>. In Yoda's words,
<a href="http://www.yodajeff.com/multimedia/sounds/episode5/afraid.wav">if you are not afraid,
you will be, you will be</a>.
</p><p>So how can you improve your own privacy? Chaff runs in the background, and every few minutes
issues a search query (using some random search terms) to your currently selected Search Engine,
which gets tied to your account and/or your IP address at your search provider. Attaching
random <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaff_(radar_countermeasure)">chaff</a>
to your account makes it less unique, hence improving your privacy.
</p>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> If you want to add an area for user feedback to any of your pages, take a look at the <a href="notes.html">notes.html</a>
template.</p>
